Philip Boehm wins Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize

Philip Boehm, whose translation (from the Polish) of Anna Janko’s A Little Annihilation is forthcoming from World Editions on June 2 in the US, has won the 2020 Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize, which is awarded by the Goethe-Institute of New York, for his translation (from the German) of The Fox and Dr. Shimamura by Christine Wunnicke (New Directions). The $10,000 prize was established in 1996 to honor translators of German literature.

This is Boehm’s second win. The Goethe-Institut will celebrate Boehm in a virtual event called “Translating Unconventional Narratives: A Conversation with 2020 Wolff Prizewinner Philip Boehm” on May 9 at 3 p.m. EST featuring a discussion with Boehm and chair of the jury Shelley Frisch. To register for the event, click here.
